JEET KUNE DO FACTS

WHAT IS JEET KUNE DO?

Jeet Kune Do is a ‘street combat’ martial art system that was heavily popularised by the famous martial artist Bruce Lee. A relatively modern system, founded in 1969, Jeet Kune Do was created not only as an eclectic and extremely effective martial art but also as a philosophy of life.

Bruce Lee went onto research and analyse different martial arts, mainly looking at fencing and boxing to take and adapt his main principles to. Such is this that Jeet Kune Do is no fixed or patterned, it was created with the concept of interception or attacking whilst one’s opponent is about to attack.

Since Lee’s death Jeet Kune Do has been immortalised in martial arts history as one of the most effective martial arts and has found itself being taught and practiced all over the world by all manner of people. It is used frequently in popular culture, and features heavily in video games such as the Street Fighter franchise.

In 2004, the Bruce Lee Foundation decided to use the name Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do to refer to the martial arts system that Lee founded; Jun Fan was Lee’s Chinese given name.

WHAT WILL I LEARN FROM JEET KUNE DO?

Jeet Kune Do practitioners believe in minimal movements with effects and extreme speed. Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do focuses on combat realism, it works by using different tools or techniques to handle different situations. Those situations become ‘ranges’ such as kicking, grappling and punching.

It utilises movements from a multitude of different martial arts, and movement can be placed into one of five ways to attack. These are Single Angular Attack and its converse Single Direct Attack; Hand Immobilization Attack; Progressive Indirect Attack; Attack by Combinations; and Attack by Drawing. Emphasis is placed on deception and counter striking in all of these.

Jeet Kune Do is employed around centre line control, meaning that if you guard the middle then an attacker would have to come from the outside. That enables students to defend and parry against the attack more easily as it will have to be a wider movement if the middle is defended.

WHAT ARE THE JEET KUNE DO BELTS/RANKINGS?

Jeet Kune Do does not have belt rank.
